Introduction
When Charlie’s beautiful cedar-finished home was impacted by a fire, the smoke damage left behind was not only visible but deeply embedded in the open beam structures and wood ceilings throughout the house. Charlie, determined to restore his home with care and precision, took a proactive approach by managing the restoration himself—bypassing traditional contractor intermediaries. With both time and quality being top priorities, our team was brought in to perform professional soda blasting to effectively remove smoke residue and odor, meeting expectations set by both Charlie and the insurance company.
Project Background
Client Profile
Charlie is a highly engaged homeowner who chose to spearhead the restoration efforts personally, prioritizing direct involvement and high-quality outcomes. His commitment to excellence and hands-on management style meant he was seeking a contractor who shared his standards and urgency.
Damage Overview
The damage spanned both levels of the home, with a significant focus on the upstairs cedar ceilings and exposed beams. While some areas had already been sandblasted, they lacked the depth of cleaning required to eliminate the lingering smoke smell and blackened residue. Soda blasting was proposed as the next logical step to safely and effectively lift contamination from the wood without compromising its integrity.
Details of the Soda Blasting Procedure
1. Initial Consultation
Charlie contacted us with a good foundational understanding of soda blasting and its advantages over other methods. During the call, we discussed the importance of being prepared with the right blasting media—specifically baking soda for odor neutralization and crushed glass for areas requiring a more aggressive approach. Charlie emphasized he was ready to move forward promptly and confidently.

2. Job Setup
A job walkthrough was scheduled for Wednesday morning to solidify expectations and logistics. Unlike many projects, this one didn’t require outside references or competing quotes—Charlie had already vetted our capabilities and was ready to begin. His clear vision and confidence allowed us to mobilize efficiently.
3. Execution Plan
The project officially kicked off on Tuesday, May 20 at 8:00 AM. All materials, including large quantities of baking soda and required safety and containment equipment, were delivered to the job site in advance. Containment strategies were critical, given Charlie’s strong preference for cleanliness and organization throughout the process. The team laid out tarps, set up ventilation systems, and mapped the work areas to maintain strict cleaning standards.
Specific Areas of Focus

Upstairs Restoration
The upstairs area presented the most complexity, with cedar ceilings extending through three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a master closet, and a stairway. Each section required precision soda blasting to gently lift smoke damage while preserving the natural wood tones. For beams with water staining, we prepared for follow-up sanding, leveraging guidance from relevant video tutorials and internal best practices.
Downstairs Work
On the lower level, some cedar panels had already been removed, altering the blasting strategy. We assessed which beams still required treatment and determined that while less wood was exposed, a targeted cleaning approach would still benefit the remaining areas and support the overall odor removal effort.
Custom Elements and Future Considerations

One standout request from Charlie was to restore the fireplace surround with added care, given its central aesthetic and sentimental importance. Additionally, demo work to remove adhesive flooring on the second-story deck was considered. If successful, this could lead to extended work opportunities in that space—offering further chances to enhance the home’s value and livability.
This project with Charlie is a strong example of what’s possible when a homeowner and restoration team are aligned on vision, standards, and execution. We’re proud to play a key role in breathing life back into a home with such unique character. From the initial consultation to careful soda blasting execution, our focus remains on cleanliness, efficiency, and top-tier results.
As the project progresses, we’re excited about the potential for additional restoration phases—and even more so about the transformation that’s already underway.
